FEEDING OF PATIENTS WITH HIV


DIET AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO BEARERS OF HIV VIRUS

People with HIV or AIDS suffer a number of complications associated with the disease, which affect their appetite and reduce the absorption of food, resulting in weight loss and malnutrition. Moreover, the body increases its energy needs and nutrients to fight infection. Some symptoms of the disease such as diarrhea, powerfully influence this weight loss because when a person has diarrhea, food is not properly digested and, therefore, the body is unable to absorb nutrients. If the patient does not eat enough, or foods are not absorbed properly, the body draws on reserves accumulated energy coming from body fat and proteins containing muscles. Thus, the patient loses weight and lose muscle mass.

The diet should be balanced and rich in nutrients, proteins and vitamins. Some products must be taken daily, and others only occasionally. To be considered that diet is healthy and balanced, this should include certain foods with frequency and proportion necessary, in addition according to the specific characteristics of the individual (age, sex, health status, physical activity). We recommend:

1. Rice, cereals, grains.

4. Dairy products of animal origin should be eliminated (milk, yogurt, butter, cheese) and replaced with other sources of calcium and vegetable proteins such as milk, sesame, coconut milk and other grains available. 5.
